Scarlett's Acting Career
1994–2002: Early work and breakthrough
1994At the age of nine, Scarlett Johansson made her film debut as John Ritter's daughter in the fantasy comedy "North." During the filming, she exhibited an intuitive understanding of her role.
1995Johansson played minor roles, including the daughter of Sean Connery and Kate Capshaw's characters in the mystery thriller "Just Cause" and an art student in "If Lucy Fell" in 1996.
1996Her first leading role was as Amanda, the younger sister of a pregnant teenager who runs away from her foster home in "Manny & Lo," alongside Aleksa Palladino and her brother, Hunter. Johansson received positive reviews for her performance, earning a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead Female.
1997Appeared in minor roles in "Fall" and "Home Alone 3."
1998Gained wider attention for her role in "The Horse Whisperer," co-starring with director Robert Redford. Johansson received an "introducing" credit for this film, her seventh role. Redford described her as "13 going on 30," and she was nominated for the Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Most Promising Actress.
1999Johansson appeared in "My Brother the Pig."
2001Starred in the Coen brothers' neo-noir film "The Man Who Wasn't There" and had a breakthrough playing a cynical outcast in Terry Zwigoff's black comedy "Ghost World." She auditioned for the latter via a tape from New York, and the film, though a box office failure, gained cult status. Johansson was credited with "sensitivity and talent [that] belie her age" and won a Toronto Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress.
2003–2004: Transition to adult roles
2003Transitioned from teen to adult roles with two films: "Lost in Translation" and "Girl with a Pearl Earring." In the former, directed by Sofia Coppola, Johansson played Charlotte, a listless young wife, receiving critical acclaim and grossing $119 million. Coppola based the film on the relationship between Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart. In the latter, directed by Peter Webber, she portrayed Griet, a 17th-century servant in Vermeer's household, earning nominations for BAFTA and Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress and winning the BAFTA for "Lost in Translation." Variety noted these roles established her as a versatile actress.
2004Had five releases, including critical and commercial failures like "The Perfect Score," "A Love Song for Bobby Long," and "A Good Woman." In "A Love Song for Bobby Long," co-starring with John Travolta, Johansson played a discontented teenager and earned a Golden Globe nomination. Voiced Princess Mindy in "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie," her most commercially successful release that year. Reprised the role in the video game adaptation. Also starred in "In Good Company," a comedy-drama receiving positive reviews, with Ebert praising her portrayal for its "quiet fascination."
2005–2009: Collaborations with Woody Allen
2005Johansson played Nola, an aspiring actress in Woody Allen's drama "Match Point," engaging in an affair with a married man (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). Allen changed the character's nationality from British to American after replacing Kate Winslet with Johansson. The film was a box office success, earning her nominations for the Golden Globe and Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress. Also starred in Michael Bay's science fiction film "The Island," undergoing a tonsillectomy and filming for 14 hours a day, receiving mixed reviews, and grossing $163 million against a $126 million budget.
2006Starred in Woody Allen's "Scoop" opposite Hugh Jackman, a modest worldwide box office success but polarized critics. Also appeared in Brian De Palma's "The Black Dahlia," facing criticism for being miscast. Starred in the short film "When the Deal Goes Down" alongside Jackman. Had a supporting role in Christopher Nolan's "The Prestige," praised for her ambiguity and shielded quality but faced skepticism from some critics regarding her performance, including critiques of her English accent.
2007Johansson's sole release was the critically panned comedy-drama "The Nanny Diaries," playing a college graduate working as a nanny alongside Chris Evans and Laura Linney. Reviews of her performance were mixed.
2008Starred with Natalie Portman and Eric Bana in "The Other Boleyn Girl," earning mixed reviews. Also starred in her third collaboration with Woody Allen, "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," filmed in Spain and one of Allen's most profitable films. Played the femme fatale Silken Floss in "The Spirit," receiving poor reviews for being melodramatic, unoriginal, and sexist.
2009Johansson's only role was as Anna Marks, a yoga instructor, in the ensemble comedy-drama "He's Just Not That into You." The film received tepid reviews but was a box office success.
2010–2013: Marvel Cinematic Universe and worldwide recognition
2010Made Broadway debut in a revival of Arthur Miller's "A View from the Bridge," winning the 2010 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play. Faced criticism alongside Broadway actors for mainstream Hollywood actors winning such awards.
2010Scarlett secured the role of Black Widow in Jon Favreau's "Iron Man 2," marking her entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Dyeing her hair red and undergoing stunt and strength training for the role, the film grossed $623.9 million and received generally positive reviews, although reviewers criticized the character's writing. Also starred in "We Bought a Zoo," receiving mainly favorable reviews and a Teen Choice Award nomination.
2012She played Black Widow again in "The Avengers," another MCU film that became the third highest-grossing film globally. Received nominations for two Teen Choice Awards and three People's Choice Awards for her performance. Portrayed Janet Leigh in Sacha Gervasi's "Hitchcock," earning praise for conveying spunk, intelligence, and humor.
2013Johansson starred in the Broadway revival of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," receiving mixed reviews. Also appeared in Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut, "Don Jon," receiving positive reviews for her performance. Voiced Samantha, a self-aware computer operating system, in Spike Jonze's film "Her," winning Best Actress at the Rome International Film Festival and the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress. Cast in Jonathan Glazer's "Under the Skin," earning praise for her performance, and receiving a BIFA Award nomination.
2014–2020: Blockbuster films and critical acclaim
2014Scarlett reprised Black Widow role in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," earning a Saturn Award nomination. Played a supporting role in "Chef," which grossed over $45 million and received positive reviews. Starred in Luc Besson's "Lucy," grossing $458 million and praised for themes, visuals, and Johansson's performance.

Scarlett’s Music career
In 2006, Johansson contributed to the non-profit collection "Unexpected Dreams – Songs from the Stars," singing the track "Summertime." She also joined the Jesus and Mary Chain for a reunion show at Coachella in April 2007. In the following year, Johansson took on the leading role in Justin Timberlake's music video for "What Goes Around... Comes Around," earning a nomination for an MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year.

May 2008 saw the release of Johansson's debut album, "Anywhere I Lay My Head." The album featured one original song and ten cover versions of Tom Waits songs, with contributions from David Bowie and members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Celebration. Reviews were mixed, with Spin expressing reservations about Johansson's singing. However, some critics found the album "surprisingly alluring," "bravely eccentric," and "brilliant" with "ghostly magic." NME even named it the "23rd best album of 2008," and it peaked at number 126 on the Billboard 200. Johansson, who started listening to Waits at a young age, expressed her admiration, stating, "His melodies are so beautiful, his voice is so distinct, and I had my own way of doing Tom Waits songs."

In September 2009, Johansson and singer-songwriter Pete Yorn released the collaborative album "Break Up," drawing inspiration from Serge Gainsbourg's duets with Brigitte Bardot. The album reached number 41 in the US. In 2010, Johansson featured on Steel Train's release, "Terrible Thrills Vol. 1," singing "Bullet." She also contributed "One Whole Hour" to the 2011 soundtrack of the documentary film "Wretches & Jabberers" and sang on J. Ralph's track "Before My Time" for the end credits of the climate documentary "Chasing Ice" in 2012.

In February 2015, Johansson formed the band "the Singles" with Este Haim from HAIM, Holly Miranda, Kendra Morris, and Julia Haltigan. The group's first single, "Candy," was released. However, Johansson faced a cease and desist order from another band named the Singles. In 2016, she performed "Trust in Me" for "The Jungle Book" soundtrack and contributed "Set It All Free" and "I Don't Wanna" to the "Sing: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack." In 2018, Johansson reunited with Pete Yorn for the EP titled "Apart," released on June 1.

Public Perception and Beauty Rankings of Scarlett Johansson
Some media and fans commonly refer to Scarlett Johansson as "ScarJo," a nickname she finds lazy, flippant, and insulting. Despite the widespread use of this moniker, Johansson opts not to engage in social media, citing a lack of interest in continuously sharing details of her everyday life.

In the media, Johansson is often described as a sex symbol, with The Sydney Morning Herald going so far as to label her "the embodiment of male fantasy." Director Woody Allen acknowledged her attractiveness during the filming of Match Point, describing her as "beautiful" and "sexually overwhelming." Film critic Anthony Lane noted in 2014 that Johansson is keenly aware of her sultriness and how it contributes to her reputation.

However, Johansson has expressed displeasure at being overly sexualized, emphasizing that preoccupations with one's attractiveness are fleeting. This sentiment led to her losing the role of Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) because director David Fincher deemed her "too sexy" for the part.

Despite her reservations about being objectified, Johansson consistently ranks high in various beauty listings. Maxim featured her in their Hot 100 list from 2006 to 2014, and she has been named "Sexiest Woman Alive" twice by Esquire (2006 and 2013). Other publications, including Playboy (2007), Men's Health (2011), and FHM (since 2005), have also included her in similar rankings. In 2010, she was honored as GQ's Babe of the Year, and Madame Tussauds New York museum unveiled a wax statue in her likeness in 2015.
